Abstract
Within recent years there considerable evidence has accumlated for existance of cytolytic and cytotoxic effects of proteolytic enzymes on malignant; cells and proteolytic enzymes have been used with considerable success in the treatment of tumors. However, its mode of action remains to be clear.
The present experiments were designed to investigate to detern ine the effect of Wobe¡©MugosR)(WM, proteolytic enzymes) on the humoral and cellular imi, iune responses to sheep red blood cells in mice.
WM enhanced the 24-hour delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) determined by footpad swelling reaction, whereas humoral immune responses determined by the splenic plaque-forming cell reaction, hemagglutination and Arthus reaction were not affected by the enzymes.
The enhanced DTH by administration of WM was decreased to 55% after administration of cyclophosphamide, indicating the suppressor T lymphocytes may be involved in the enhancement of DTH by WM
A modified Anson method for the measurement of the proteolytic and fibrinolytic activities in the sera from the mice inj cted with WM was confirmed.
The possible role of calf thymus contained in WM was discussed with regard to the enhanced immune response.
